A Modern
Workshop

The Strawbyte Workshop is situated in the heart of rural England and is the workshop of accomplished woodworker Karl Pountney. For a while now, Karl has been sharing what he does on YouTube, making short films about tools, techniques, and simple projects that just about anyone can accomplish.

The workshop moved to its current space in the long, hot summer of 2018.

Manufactoring
For Makers & Pros

One successful spin-off has been the manufacture of innovative woodworking jigs and accessories.

The constraints of making furniture in a small workshop inspired a solution for cutting sheet goods in small spaces.

The Original Strawbyte Waste Side Cut Jig is popular with hobbyists and professional woodworkers alike, which delivers consistency and accuracy for everyone.

About Us
& The Strawbyte Workshop?

“Hello, I’m Karl. Welcome to the Strawbyte Workshop. I’m a maker & joiner in my spare time who also creates content for YouTube.“

THE STRAWBYTE STORY

When I was a boy, I used to make all sorts of things. My dad was a carpenter and joiner, so naturally, I learned by his side. But when it came to getting my first job, I eventually chose Electronics and Electrical Engineering before becoming an IT systems engineer.

I love to make stuff. Everything I learned from my dad has allowed me to build or make pretty much everything I’ve needed over the years. I now focus on joinery and furniture making part-time but don’t consider myself a professional. Instead, I see myself as an accomplished amateur in the truest sense of the word—because I love it.

I created my channel to show that achieving good results across a wide range of projects in your home, garden, or workshop is within everyone's grasp. Forty years on from making my first woodworking project with my dad, I’m still learning, and I’m on a mission to share that knowledge via YouTube.

The name Strawbyte is an anagram of the place name STEWARTBY, a small village in Bedfordshire, UK, home to my sailing club. In 2007, they needed help with a website. I obliged and created the Strawbyte Design & Hosting Co.
